History
The Janel Group was established in New York City in 1974 as a company specializing in quality import customs brokerage and related transport services. Our founder, James N Jannello had a vision of a full-service company built on the foundation of customer service while providing competitive services in what was an emerging market at the time. In a short period of time, Janel had established itself as a reliable full-service air and ocean freight forwarder and customs broker. The operation expanded to include export services with trucking and warehousing within our first year of existence. Based on the strength and success of our New York operation, Janel set its sights on expansion on a national level, establishing a national network to serve our growing customer base.
The first step of expansion was in 1979, opening branch offices in the Chicago (Midwest) and Los Angeles (West Coast) markets, further solidifying our position in the transportation industry. The new offices immediately reaped benefits and became extremely successful in a short period of time. In 1994, the company further expanded into the Atlanta (Southeast) market (with similar results, giving us true national reach and presence to handle shipments in any part of the country.
From 2000 to 2002, The Janel Group became a truly international family with the opening of branch offices in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Shenzhen, giving us a strong foothold in mainland China and Southeast Asia. The flexibility of having our own offices in this most important region has enabled the company to grow quicker than any other time in our history.
After solidifying the company as an international transportation provider, the vision expanded to offering a complete supply chain solution. In 2007 Janel made a strategic acquisition of the Order Logistics brand and software technologies, customer relationships and related assets. The acquisition includes the web-based supply chain technology solution Solve (IT)2, which enables customers to collaborate in the planning, execution, management and tracking of shipments, financial settlement, procurement and quality control activities on a worldwide basis.
By acquiring the Order Logistics business to strategically complement its traditional Freight Forwarding, Customs Brokerage and other logistics services, Janel is well-positioned to become a leader in the development of global supply chain solutions. Its capabilities now include a comprehensive end-to-end solution for the sourcing, transportation, real-time tracking, documentation and management of in-transit inventories at the order level detail on a global scale.
